Sarah Laing

A former Westhill swimmer, I now co-lead Entry Squad, working with our newest members as they begin their journey in the club. I discovered my love for coaching while assisting Silver Squad as part of my DofE and now have almost ten years of experience, alongside three years as a qualified swimming teacher. Currently studying Primary Education at the University of Aberdeen, my passion for teaching runs through everything I do. My coaching philosophy centres on supporting each swimmer as an individual, building confidence, and fostering an inclusive environment where every child feels valued and inspired to reach their potential.

Clare Macmillan

One of the lead coaches for Entry Squad. Been part of Westhill District Amateur Swim Club for 14 years.

I got involved as a poolside helper when my eldest son started Entry Squad. After a few years I took over as lead coach for Bronze Squad and after another couple of years became lead coach of Silver Squad.

Jim Cameron

With over three decades of coaching experience, I’ve supported swimmers at every stage of their journey, from club training to national success. Along the way, I’ve coached athletes to North District and Scottish Age Group Records, and guided a swimmer to double silver at the British Age Group Championships in Sheffield. My philosophy is built on teamwork, trust, and respect—developing each athlete to reach their true potential.

Gary Paterson Coach Bio

A former Rolls Royce engineer turned swimming coach, I’ve spent over two decades helping athletes achieve their potential. From leading South Aberdeenshire Swimming to coaching with Team Scotland at multiple Commonwealth Games, my philosophy is simple: be athlete-centred, focus on the process, and value resilience as much as results.
